Acheron - Dark Hunter Series

My favorite new vampire book is called Acheron. When I first picked it up and read the back cover I didn't think I would enjoy it, it just didn't sound like my cup of tea. I tend to favor dark, violent vampire stories over the romanticized vampire themed stories. But let me tell you, I'm so very glad that I bought the book anyway because it was one of the best books I have ever read.

The book itself is part of a book series called the Dark Hunter Series by an author named Sherrilyn Kenyon and there are over ten books in the series so far. One thing to keep in mind about this series is that the vampires are interpreted in a very different way to most other tales and stories. Especially the glittery creatures that you find in books such as Twilight.

For one thing, in these books vampires originated from the Greeks. Primarily the Greek God Apollo and the Goddess Artemis.

The legend of vampires started in the books when Apollo had his own race of people called Apollites, but those people rebelled against the gods and killed Apollo's human lover. In a fit of rage Apollo cursed the race and banished them from ever walking in the sun, he also made it so that they would have to become monsters if they wished to live past a certain age by drinking the blood of another and become a vampire.

Once they do this, they lose most of their humanity and become nothing more than blood thirsty barbarians who want to escape the world that Apollo trapped them within. Especially around Halloween which is when the Apollites seem to be at their most savage.

This is where Artemis comes in, she wanders through time and worlds searching for damned souls, humans that have been murdered and killed by their enemies. She offers them a choice and tells them that she can send them back to their life on earth to get revenge against those who murdered them. On one condition.

Afterwards the damned soul must work for her. What she doesn't tell them is that she also turns them into powerful vampires called Dark Hunters who must spend eternity hunting down Apollites and destroying them in order to protect mankind.

Now, I don't want to give too much away and spoil it for you but Acheron is a powerful god that was blackmailed by Artemis and forced to work for her as the leader of the Dark Hunters. The book by the same name, Acheron, tells you all about his life, spanning thousands of years and showing you the horrors and troubles he had to face in his life, horrors that came to shape him as one of the most respected and powerful beings in existence, even Zeus himself is wary of Acheron.

Of course the book series includes other creatures such as lycanthropes, demons and various creatures of the night. But the primary focus is on the vampires - both Dark Hunters and Apollites. If you have never read one of the books from the series before then, trust me, try one and you will be hooked. I know this because the same thing happened to me and I have now read every book that Kenyon has ever written. And I still want more!
