Angel the Vampire

I couldn't believe it - but there was Angel the Vampire. On TV! I was watching TV in the wee hours of the morning the other day, trying to find something of interest to watch, and I came across a show I hadn't seen in ages. Do you remember a TV show called Angel?

It was spin-off of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The Show ran in 1999 to 2004. I always liked the character of Angel/Angelus. Originally after he was made by Darla, hundreds of years ago, Angel was a really bad vampire - long before he ever met Buffy. He and Darla, along with a few friends, Spike and Drusilla, worked their way across europe, killing hundreds - maybe even thousands - of innocent people.

But when he was on Buffy, Angel was good most of the show, helping her to fight evil demons, vamps and the like, and even dated her for a time. But later on, in the Buffy The Vampire Slayer show, we find out that his human soul was restored to him by gypsies, as a punishment for killing one of their family members, overwhelming him with guilt about his past deeds. And because of this he can never be truly happy without becoming his dangerous and deadly alter ego "Angelus".

Eventually this leads him off the Buffy show on his own, leaving Sunnydale for Los Angeles and the beginning of his own TV show. In his show, Angel the Vampire hooks up with a couple of others and together they open a private eye business, Angel Investigations, to help other lost souls out of dangerous situations. And hopefully to atone for his past sins.

Overall the Angel TV show has drama and comedy in it, horror, martial arts and also lots of romance. The show really perked me up at 5:00 in the morning and reminded me just how much I always liked the Angel vampire character. I have since watched quite a few episodes.

Throughout the run of the show, Angel the Vampire meets all kinds of demons, warlocks, vampires and beasts and always manages to turn them in the right direction. He was not your typical "Dracula type" vampire at all - he yearns to be a champion and to help the helpless among us.

Played by David Boreanaz, Angel the vampire, has a soul and is an interesting character with many good, and bad, things going for him. All of which add up to making him an interesting character to watch. And he does make quite a few personality changes over the course of Buffy, and later his own TV show.

To start off, when we are introduced to him, he seems a somewhat reluctant hero on the Buffy show - later on he becomes evil for a time (and when he's bad, he's really bad as Angelus, his devious and deadly killer other side - when he has no soul), after which he later morphs into a more mature champion of the helpless on Angel the TV show.

And he is a character with flaws that make him so much more interesting. For example, he has a lot of charisma and sex appeal, he is very good looking, and is definitely a "man's man", but at the same time he can be goofy and silly, childlike and awkward, sulking and brooding (which he does a lot), and he is also a terrible singer that really loved to share his rendition of "Mandy" at every possible opportunity.

All in all, I always liked this show. Boreanz did a great job portraying the Angel character and it was always interesting to see what new adventures that they would be involved in each episode. Overall the feel of Angel's show was darker than Buffy, and much more adult but still definitely supernatural. So, if I am awake again at 5:00 in the morning, I am definitely tuning in to see what other demons Angel the Vampire and his team slays.
