Eric Northman

Ever heard of Eric Northman? The Sookie Stackhouse novel series? Charlaine Harris? The True Blood series on HBO? Personally, I really enjoy vampire stories and have read many different ones over the years. Most have the general plot of gorgeous male vampire seduces female and then gets killed by some other character.

Anne Rice has written many wonderful tales of vampires which include ones that remind us of ourselves and others that remind us of who we would never want to be. Stephanie Meyer is popular today with her book about Bella Swan and the vampire she loves.

I would have to say that one of my all time favorite vampires, though, especially on this show, would have to be Eric Northman from the Sookie Stackhouse novel series by Charlaine Harris. Her novels are also the basis of the True Blood series currently on HBO.

In this series, vampires are able to “live” among the living by the invention of synthetic blood. Sookie (the female) originally falls in love with Bill the vampire who is working in Eric’s domain. After many twists, however, Sookie is finally seduced by Eric.

Eric is a businessman who owns a bar and is basically a rich vampire lord. He has many qualities that are very intriguing such as the fact that he is very old fashioned in his beliefs about what women should do. He wants to take care of Sookie and give her everything she possibly could need. His sense of humor is very dry and sarcastic which is also a reason to enjoy his character.

Eric is also your typical vampire in the way that he believes he should get whatever he wants because he can. He first tried to seduce Sookie into leaving Bill for him. Then at one point loses his memory and is very dependent upon Sookie. At this point she realizes that she could love the vampire if only he stayed that way.

When he recovers his memory, he realizes that he really likes Sookie, and therefore does everything in his power to win her over. I like the fierceness in which he loves her and wants to protect her from everything. He could choose any vampire that he wished to live with him forever. Instead, he chose a simple, frail human to be with.

Harris does use some of the traditional vampire folklore with her vampire series. Eric has to be “dead” during the day in which he sleeps in a totally dark room underground. He is only able to be “alive” when it is dark. Eric can fly, but it is never clear if he actually transforms into a bat or is just able to move very rapidly.

One thing is true however, it is clear from the Sookie Stackhouse series that Eric is a vampire to watch out for. He is ruthless, egotistical, and vain. However, he is a fierce friend and will do anything to protect the ones he loves.

And here are a few great gift ideas for Eric fans!

"If I meet the true death without at least kissing you, Sookie Stackhouse, that will be my biggest regret." -- Eric Northman, True Blood
