Just what can I say about Spike the Vampire? One of my all time favorite vampire characters is Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV Show. The reason I love Spike is that he is complex, when his character is first introduced he is a typical blood-thirsty evil vampire. He is paired with Drusilla, who is crazy and even more evil than him.
He is lovesick over her, will go to any end to protect and please her. He is after Buffy the Vampire Slayer, of course, and the two provide us loads of hilarious banter as they battle. As Spikes character continues on the show he changes; into a vampire who shows emotions, feels remorse, is relentless, and also mysterious.
One of my favorite episodes is when you learn about how Spike became a vampire, and how he was once known as "William the Bloody" for his awful poetry. He is turned into a vampire or "sired" by Drusilla. Drusilla, Angelus, Darla and Spike terrorize people for a nearly a century.
This creates another dynamic between him and another main character vampire on the show - Angel aka Angelus. We also learn how Spike has killed two vampire slayers in the past. This makes him a worthy opponent for Buffy .
Spike the vampire becomes a fan favorite with his sense of humor, sarcasm, wit and stating the obvious when everyone else is reluctant to say it out loud. He brings information that Buffy needs and she utilizes him as an ally, even though she claims he is still an evil dead thing.
The most interesting storyline with Spike is how his relationship with Buffy develops; how he becomes the only one who understands her experience with life and death. Their sexual chemistry provides for steamy screen time and a pull between good and evil.
Their relationship ends badly and Spike acquires a soul eventually so that he can "win" Buffy back. Which backfires, of course. The actor, James Marsters is hot, creative, and plays this part so well. It's by far the best role he's had. The musical episode where Spike plays the guitar and sings shows that the actor is also a very talented musician.
"You’re not asleep, and you’re not dead. I’m here, and I love you. I have always loved you, and I will always love you. I was thinking of you, seeing your face in my mind, every second that I was away. When I told you that I didn’t want you, it was the very blackest kind of blasphemy." -- Edward Cullen, Twilight
